You Know You're a Mommy When...
You know you're a mommy when:

1. it suddenly hits you that the song that's been going through your head all evening is a jazzy version of "Wheels on the Bus"

2. your husband comments that he likes the way you smell, and you smile secretly knowing the only perfume you've worn in weeks is eau de spit-up mixed carefully with the right dose of baby lotion

3. the sweetest sound in the world to you is a baby's laugh

4. you hear a clip of classical music on a commercial or in a store and immediately identify it as a Baby Einstein song, and can tell which toy you heard it on first

5. you can suddenly remember the words to kids' songs you haven't sung in years--and look up other songs on the Internet when you can't remember the words

6. someone engages you in an intellectual conversation and the best thing you can think to say involves a poopy diaper

7. you hear a baby cry anywhere, on tv or in a store or restaurant or in church, and listen carefully to make sure it's not yours, even if he's sleeping in your lap at the time

8. the mess of brightly-colored baby toys in the corner of your living room looks homey, not the cluttered mess you originally thought it was

9. your kid has had more pictures taken of him in the last week than you have in the past year

10. it only takes a few minutes into a naptime for you to get lonely for his perfect little smile

"Now listen here, Mr. Elephant!"

(Yes, I have experienced many of these in the last couple of days. Sigh...I must be a mommy, and I'm darn proud of it.)

Teething update: Now not only does that one tooth look like it's about to break through, but the one next to it looks like it's about to come in too. If his gums cooperate, he could have two teeth by maybe the end of the weekend. He's been a little less fussy about it in the last day, but he's still clearly not sleeping as well. He woke up before dawn today for his first feeding, and I'm certain it was teething pain, not hunger, that woke him up. At least he went back to sleep easily after I comforted him.

You know, many of those same qualities apply to being a grandmother! It's amazing how many songs come to mind that I haven't thought of in years. Fortunately, I don't wear your perfume too often -- one of the benefits of being the nana and not the mama. Nana can give him back at just the right times!

I forgot -- There's one to add to your list when Patrick is a little older. You know you're a mama when you turn to look whenever a child says "Mama" in a store -- even if your kids are grown!
